UC Davis is in its third year of a four-year reclassification to NCAA Division I status, continuing a transition that began when the university announced its decision in 2003 to join the Big West Conference and NCAA Division I (D-I). During the reclassification period, UC Davis is complying with D-I rules, including those governing scheduling, financial aid, academics and student-athlete recruitment. UC Davis will become an active member of Division I and eligible for NCAA Championships beginning with the 2007-08 academic year.
Approximately 720 student-athletes compete for UC Davis, majoring in 87 different undergraduate programs and three graduate programs. UC Davis currently sponsors 26 NCAA sports, including 14 sports for women and 12 for men. The department continues to emphasize the academic success of its student-athletes and places value on leadership, community service, and athletic excellence in its programs.
UC Davis has had multiple winners of several prestigious awards, including NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, Top VIII and Woman of the Year Awards, and the Ethnic Minority Postgraduate Scholarship For Careers In Athletics
