Cody Duncan
Sophomore Philosophy and Technocultural Studies major Cody Duncan has always known he was meant for college. "It never occurred to me that I wouldn't be going," he says. Being a first-generation college student never made him feel as though he was put at a disadvantage, either. Duncan says, "If more people understood what college is really like, I truly think more people would attend."
When he arrived on campus last year, Duncan was a Chemistry major, but quickly found that his interests lay elsewhere. A fortuitous enrollment in a philosophy class led him to his current major. "It just clicked with me," he said. He also channeled a developing love for home recording into a volunteer gig at UC Davis' radio station, KDVS. "Getting involved with the radio station was a great way to meet new people," recalls Duncan. In his spare time, he works for the recreation department, teaching tennis clinics, chaperoning trips and spending time with kids.
A recent recipient of the Reno Cruz Scholarship for first-generation college students, Duncan can now spend more time doing what he loves most. "College is really my job now," he comments. Duncan's enthusiasm for college has even crept into his future career goals. "I would love to be a professor one day," he says. When asked what advice he might offer newcomers to the Davis campus, Duncan says emphatically, "Spend as little time as possible in your room. I am having more fun than I ever imagined I would here."
