Scholarship Recipients :: Zachary Shelton

Zachary Shelton, Class of '08

Senior Managerial Economics major Zachary Shelton is what you might call an academic purist — forget the extra-curricular activities, clubs and side-projects — for him it's all about the schoolwork. Though he earned the valedictory spot in his graduating high school class, Shelton didn't truly feel at home until he first set foot in a UC Davis classroom. "It felt right," he recalls. "For the first time I felt like, 'I am supposed to be doing this.'" Practical and focused, Shelton prefers to take his work very seriously. "School is like my job," he says. "When I am here, I put blinders on. I am very private."

When thinking about what lies ahead, Shelton prefers to keep an open mind. He plans to spend time after college soaking up some practical experience work in the financial sector. "I don't know if I will like what comes with working in the business world," he says. "So I want to try it out."

Over his four years on campus, Shelton has received numerous scholarships. And with four other brothers having gone through or currently attending college, he can see what a difference the money makes. "One of my brothers went to a private school, and he has bigger loans to pay," says Shelton. "I know that when I graduate, I will only have a couple of smaller loans, which is nice."
