Scholarship Recipients :: Manmeet Toor

Manmeet Toor, Class of '08

"Davis is like it's own little world," muses senior English major Manmeet Toor. "You meet people in your freshman year, having no idea what a huge impact they will have on your life." With the help of her Davis network of friends and teachers, Toor has in turn focused her energies on improving the lives of those in the community.

Toor lovingly refers to each of her activities as "her babies", programs that she has helped to nurture and flourish during her years at UC Davis. Currently she serves as editor of Awaaz, a student-run South Asian magazine that aims to raise awareness about a swath of local and global issues. She also recently began working to revive the Davis chapter of Best Buddies, a program matching intellectually disabled adults with college students for social activities. "The participants in [Best Buddies] are so inspiring," she says. "Their excitement helps me to look at the world differently."

Unlike some students, Toor is eager to tackle law school with no break in her education. She knows that without her scholarships, she may not have had as many opportunities to participate in internships and extracurricular activities, or to work towards professional school at the pace she enjoys. "Receiving scholarships," says Toor, "has helped me to do things a little bit faster." Toor wants to use her law degree to focus on civil rights, a subject she has clear, passionate views about. "I don't understand the bad rap that lawyers get," she says. "Lawyers can help define and interpret the law for the better. Law has the potential to be the great equalizer."
