The Need
Education has the power to transform students lives. The impact of an education reaches far beyond the students—to their families, their communities and to society. The critical challenge for UC Davis is to ensure that every young person in California has equal access to becoming a student at Davis—and that this opportunity is based on the ability to achieve, not the ability to pay.
Our challenge is to provide the opportunity for these talented students to develop their full potential. Meeting the challenge will require a robust financial foundation to ensure that the undergraduate community of which we are so proud, continues to be strong.
Investing in Scholarships
Expanding the availability of scholarships is a top priority at UC Davis. At Davis, as well as across the country, fees and tuition have increased faster than families' ability to absorb the additional cost. At the same time, federal and state financial aid has not kept pace with tuition increases. Maintaining and growing the quality and diversity of our student body can happen only through the contributions of UC Davis' alumni and friends. Gifts for scholarships will ensure that UC Davis continues to recruit and retain exceptional students, which will enable the university to retain its competitive edge as one of the most academically rewarding institutions in the nation.
Scholarships do more than help pay for education—they recognize ability, talent, and financial need—and they reward hard work and dedication. In many cases, the financial assistance provided by scholarships is a key factor in the students' college choice. Scholarship recipients gain the freedom to invest their energies more fully in their coursework, pursue internships, community service activities, and leadership opportunities that will enrich their personal development and career preparation thanks to the generosity of scholarship donors.
How can I support scholarships at UC Davis?
You may support scholarships at UC Davis in two ways. Annual gifts may be made to the UC Davis Fund for Student Excellence, or you may wish to create a permanent scholarship fund in which case you would create a Scholarship Endowment.

What is the UC Davis Fund for Student Excellence?
The UC Davis Fund for Student Excellence is the general scholarship fund for the campus. Annual gifts of any amount may be directed to this fund. All contributions will be used annually to assist deserving students with scholarship assistance. Gifts of stock or property can also be used to support the UC Davis Fund for Student Excellence.
What is a Scholarship Endowment?
An endowment is a gift that is held in perpetuity and invested in a manner that provides a stable funding source for such purposes as scholarships, professorships, lecture series, and research centers. Because endowments are held in perpetuity and invested for the long term, these gifts provide one of the most secure sources of future revenue.
How is a Scholarship Endowment established?
Once you choose to make a gift to UC Davis, your giving program can be structured to fit your needs and financial goals. A UC Davis development professional can help you choose the most beneficial gift asset and the best method for transferring it to the university to achieve your giving objectives.
A minimum of $25,000 will establish a scholarship endowment at UC Davis through any outright giving method using cash, securities, or personal and real property. Gifts of a life estate or life insurance are other possibilities. Endowments can be created with a single gift or over a period of time up to five years.
What options do I have for designating my scholarship?
While you may restrict your scholarship for students involved in a particular area of interest, such as academic college, academic unit, campus organization, or project, the most beneficial scholarships are those with the fewest restrictions. This allows the campus maximum flexibility in awarding deserving students.
What options do I have for creating a named scholarship?
Donors may elect to name the endowed scholarships for themselves, their family or in honor or memory of another family member or former campus staff member. The establishment and naming of all endowed scholarship funds are subject to review and approval by UC Davis and the University of California.
Endowment agreements, signed by the donor and UC Davis, delegate to the university the responsibility to administer the funds according to the donor's wishes in perpetuity.
What tax benefits will I receive from an endowment?
Specific tax and financial benefits that you will receive as a result of your gift depend on the type of asset you give and how you transfer it to the university. You may be able to receive federal and state income tax benefits, avoid or reduce capital gains tax liability, and qualify for estate or gift tax deductions. Several types of gifts can provide tax benefits while offering a lifetime income to you and your heirs.
We recommend you consult with your attorney or accountant for advice on the legal and tax implications of any gift you might make.
