ANITRA SMITH, '08

Senior Nutrition Science major Anitra Smith's background directly informs the person she is today and the things she plans to do in the future. Having struggled all her life financially, she understands how important it is to help those in need.

Smith is most interested in aiding needy families in the African American community. "I really want to change a lot of the health–related diseases that affect African Americans," she says. She currently works with the Imani Clinic, a student-run facility catering to the working poor and unemployed in Sacramento County. Shadowing doctors and medical students, Smith's work has helped to her to gain valuable experience in the health field.

When on campus, Smith continues to foster her future career goals. Volunteering her time as a peer advisor for the Educational Opportunity Program, she works directly with freshman and transfer students. "I help people make informed decisions about their future, which is what I plan to do as a doctor," she says

Smith knows what an important role her scholarships play in her educational experience. As a recipient of the Bonnheim Scholarship, she is able to devote more of her time to community service. And it is this spirit of giving that inspires her to give back to the community herself. "I am so grateful," she says. "I have struggled all my life financially and I really appreciate the fact that there are people in the world who are willing to help others pursue their dreams and goals."
