Pre-Med AMSA
"The UC Davis Pre-Med American Medical Student Association (AMSA), provides pre-med students with different opportunities to learn about and develop a passion and sincere appreciation for the practice of medicine," said last year's president Jimmy Yu. "The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is a nationally recognized organization; it is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States with an AMSA chapter at all 126 U.S. medical schools and more than 200 pre-med chapters," Yu said.
"Being a member of Pre-Med AMSA has been a thorough pleasure every step of the way," Yu said. "When I first joined Pre-Med AMSA as a freshman, all I had was my desire to become a physician; I was absolutely clueless about the idea and culture behind being pre-med. Davis AMSA is a great resource for students who are interested in 'pre-med life.' Members feel welcomed, included, and have a support system that allows them to be completely comfortable as a pre-med.
"Personally, AMSA has provided ample opportunities for me to improve as a pre-med and make friends all the while. AMSA definitely provides students with a large array of opportunities—from giving presentations on HIV/AIDS to high school students in the STATS program, to getting involved in the elementary school nutrition program, to becoming involved in the various leadership positions, or participating in other community service projects and events in the greater Sacramento area.
"I would encourage anyone to join pre-med AMSA, whether they are sure about their commitment to medicine or still exploring. The opportunities to network and make valuable friends with people in related fields are invaluable, not to mention the other resources AMSA is able to provide. General meetings happen at least three times a quarter and are always informative and pertinent to pre-meds at any step of the way, whether they are beginning their journey as pre-medical students or already applying to medical school. Board members are always receptive to e-mails or going out of their way to meet new members, so joining AMSA at any point in the year is a hassle-free affair.
It's been one of the most rewarding experiences in my entire life!"
Interested students are encouraged to join AMSA year-round and any questions can be answered by visiting the Web site or via e-mail.
