SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT LIFE :: Autism Awareness Association

Autism Awareness Association

Jay Laytton and Tanya Shtutman are co-founders of the Autism Awareness Association. Says Laytton , "Our goal is to create awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on campus."

"This is a new club," adds Laytton, "and I am excited to see how much our club can make a difference on campus in a small amount of time. Watching this club take off since it first started a little over a year ago has been a rewarding experience."

David Amaral, M.I.N.D. Institute research director, is the faculty adviser for the club. "We help to promote education and awareness about ASD to undergraduates by bringing different researchers to speak on campus, " says Laytton, "streaming lectures from the M.I.N.D. Institute, as well as having social and community service events. In addition to promoting awareness about this disorder, the student club has recently begun to work with M.I.N.D. faculty to create support services on campus for those who are affected by ASD."

The club holds meetings every first Wednesday of the month, 6:00-7:00 p.m. For the 2009-2010 academic year, meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month, 7:00 p.m.
