Current Initiatives

The Division of Student Affairs constantly strives to provide UC Davis students a fulfilling university experience through divisional initiatives, including renovation and construction of student facilities and providing student services that support and enrich academic learning.

Strategic African American Retention Initiative

Student Affairs has launched the Strategic African American Retention Initiative, which will enhance outreach, recruitment and retention efforts for African and African American students.

As we consider the most pressing challenges to increasing and enhancing the presence of African American undergraduate students at UC Davis, a three-fold approach is demanded:

  • Grow and strengthen the pool of competitive applicants through strategic recruitment
  • Increase the number of admitted students who choose to enroll at UC Davis through effective and impactful yield efforts
  • Implement strategies that will support retention and persistence among enrolled African American students

As part of the initiative, UC Davis opened the Center for African Diaspora Student Success in fall 2015. Kayton Carter is director of the Strategic African American Retention Initiative and Center for African Diaspora Student Success.

Center for African Diaspora Student Success

The Center for African Diaspora Student Success (CADSS) is intensively focused on the retention, persistence and graduation of all undergraduate students of the African diaspora at the University of California, Davis.

Through data-driven decision-making and collective and individual student experiences, we seek to understand and improve policies and practices that lead to academic excellence. As a team, we systemize institutional collaborations and academic partnerships to create a synergistic approach tailored toward African diaspora student success.

Strategic Chicanx and Latinx Retention Initiative

The Strategic Chicanx and Latinx Retention Initiative will support Chicanx and Latinx student success at UC Davis by implementing the following priorities:

1. Implement strategies that will support retention, persistence and graduation rates for Chicanx and Latinx students. Develop and engage in best practices that promote students' academic achievement by addressing financial barriers, academic difficulty, parental involvement, sense of belonging and the training of faculty and staff.

2. Empower Chicanx and Latinx students to do well academically by engaging them in leadership, career and personal development. Empower students to believe in graduation and in preparing for a better future.

3. Prepare new UC Davis Chicanx and Latinx students by making them aware of the academic and social support available and how to use it. Establish an immediate sense of belonging for newly enrolled Chicanx and Latinx students by connecting them to the Chicanx and Latinx student community and staff and faculty. Inform Chicanx and Latinx students by creating access through strategic outreach and recruitment.

Center for Chicanx and Latinx Academic Student Success

The Center for Chicanx and Latinx Academic Student Success is dedicated to welcoming, supporting, retaining and informing students as they navigate the university. It is a space for students to find community and a familia. The center contributes to the university’s commitment to campus diversity and inclusion. At its core, the center acts as an academic support space for students to thrive as scholars and unique individuals.

Strategic Native American Retention Initiative

The Strategic Native American Retention Initiative is a multifaceted academic success program at UC Davis focused on increasing the retention, persistence and graduation rates of Native American students, in a culturally appropriate way. The goal is building connection and strengthening community, and programming is focused on academic success and resiliency. The initiative will:

  • Create a space for students to explore identity and create a sense of belonging for our Native American students: The Native American Academic Student Success Center is open in the University House on campus.
  • Create cultural legitimacy.
  • Promote academic resiliency for our students.
  • Foster students' transition to higher education and beyond.
Native American Academic Student Success Center

The Native American Academic Student Success Center (NAASSC) is focused on creating a sense of belonging for Native American students in a culturally appropriate way. Our community includes students, staff, faculty and alumni from a wide variety of tribal backgrounds, experiences and academic interests.

At the center, you can connect with UC Davis resources that enhance your academic success, learn about culturally relevant activities and create a support network with other students who identify as Native American.
