Student Affairs Planning Retreats

Message from Vice Chancellor Fred Wood

Welcome to the beginning of UC Davis' centenary year! I hope to greet many of you at the upcoming Student Affairs fall gathering today, October 13.

Two of three divisional planning meetings have been held to affirm Student Affairs' strategic goals and objectives and to address the changing campus and budgetary environments. I'm hopeful these discussions among Student Affairs directors will generate outcomes that guide decision-making in the months ahead, including:

• A common understanding of our current and emerging campus culture and the many "environmental" factors that influence our organization's mission and services on the campus;
• A common and comprehensive understanding of the emerging budgetary environment and its potential implications;
• A refined or amended statement of our division's "Strategic Goals" document and correspondingly, identification of the essential Student Affairs initiatives that we anticipate as a focus during 2008-2010;
• Philosophic principles that inform future decision making regarding the allocation of resources;
• A series of divisional budgetary strategies that we might use to address or mitigate the anticipated budgetary environment;
• How our divisional goals and objectives could be used to connect with or guide departmental directions; and
• Identification of critical management and assessment initiatives needed for the effective positioning and success of the division.

The final retreat will take place Thursday, October 30.
