RE: Academic Collaborative Initiative

In June, the Academic Collaborative Initiative Work Group presented its report on Student Affairs' role in connecting its non-academic student support departments with the academic programs at UC Davis. Following the Academic Collaborative Initiative's charge to establish best practices for engaging faculty in collaborative activities with Student Affairs programs, the departments provided listings of their individual efforts in this direction.

The Committee gathered information from fourteen separate departments. We took that information, in spreadsheet format, and consolidated it into a comprehensive report. We have formatted the report into separate sections, by outcomes and "target audiences," those constituency groups most directly affected by each program. The Work Group identified seven categories of collaborations which we have further consolidated into five:

  • Program—Includes ongoing service, consultation, or education programs and serial events such as not-for-academic credit noontime lecture series;
  • Teaching—All formal teaching for undergraduate or graduate education credit;
  • Advising—Individual and group advising services for students;
  • Research—Full academic research or research in support of administrative programs;
  • Events—One-time or periodic events such as Black Family Week and the Pow Wow.

Finally, this report is, in essence, a "snapshot" of Student Affairs departments and their services. Following the Committee's recommendation, please use it to promote your department to engage the faculty in academic collaborations, educating them in the usefulness of Student Affairs Units in optimizing the UC Davis students' educational experience.

My thanks to the Work Group for their efforts on this project, especially to Diane Russell and Peg Swain, the Co-Chairs, and the department heads who provided the data. We hope you will find it helpful.

Sincerely,
Janet Gong
Associate Vice Chancellor
