Student Affairs Matters :: Winter 2008

Message from Jan Gong continued

Q. What steps is Student Affairs taking to address the reductions?

A. With the budgetary parameters now defined, we have been charged to develop a budget reduction plan for the division by April 25, 2008. To this end, our divisional staff is preparing a set of guidelines, a timeframe, and specific departmental financial goals to utilize, as recommendations are prepared for accommodating reductions within departments.

The university may offer a voluntary reduction-in-time program for staff similar to the previous TRIP or START programs. However, at this time, details of such a program are not available. We will provide updates to staff on these options as soon as possible.

Clearly these reductions are significant and will challenge us to look hard at the strategic utility and relevance of our programs and services. But, as Chancellor Vanderhoef stated in his recent State of the Campus address, "how we deal with adversity is a valid criterion of greatness." Collectively, we have the capacity and the resolve for greatness and we are confident that we'll get through this difficult time together.
