SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT LIFE :: Advising Services

Advising Services offers personalized advising to students preparing for entrance into graduate and professional schools (including health professions, law and business). Linda Scott, pre-professional coordinator, urges students to utilize this service.

"So often students ask, 'How do I get into med school,'" says Scott. "There's no formula, however." Scott says an academic plan for getting into medical or other professional schools depends on the individual's goals and the requirements of the schools they're hoping to get into.

Tammy Hoyer, program director for Pre-Graduate and Professional School Advising, also emphasizes the need to consult early about undergraduate preparation. "One of UC Davis' strengths is Advising Services," she says. "In addition to staff advisers, we have 10 pre-health and two pre-law peer advisers, and we offer a multitude of helpful workshops for each profession."

"Advisers are familiar with graduate and professional schools across the country, not just UC Davis schools," says Pre-Professional Coordinator Susan Meyer, "so we have a broader perspective."

UC Davis students applying to professional schools also have the option of participating in the Advising Services Professional Letter Service (PLS).

"It's especially important for transfer students to talk with an advisor," says Scott, "because they have less time to prepare for applying."
