"As an intern investigator at the D.C. Public Defender Service I was worked on felony criminal cases and got a first-hand view of the criminal justice system. I also researched the unreliability of eyewitness identification and how this affects criminal cases. I encourage students from every major to check out all the internship organizations we have and apply," says Eric Chai, Washington Program adviser.
Eric Chai is a third year Managerial Economics and Political Science major who went to D.C. during winter 2008. He advises other students about the program and the application process while also bringing information about the Washington Program to students around campus. He spent his quarter in Washington conducting criminal defense investigations in felony cases. In addition to his work in Washington he has also volunteered at the Federal Defender's Office in Sacramento.
Says Jane Marie Ford, also a Washington Program adviser, "The Washington Program let me dive into the real world and make an actual difference. The atmosphere in D.C. is addicting, and my experiences there sharpened my skills and direction. There's something for everyone, and everyone has something to offer, so take advantage of this chance to explore your talents, interests, and skills for your future career!"
A senior Community and Regional Development major, Ford hopes to enter the field of public health. During her time in Washington, D.C., Ford interned at the nonprofit anti-hunger organization Bread for the World. She was able to participate in the lobbying process to advocate better government nutrition assistance programs for low-income Americans. She knows that the skills she gained during her quarter with the Washington Program will spur her career development, and loves helping other students find their own path.
