CGI U is President Clinton's initiative to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each CGI U student must make a Commitment to Action: a specific plan of action that addresses a pressing challenge on campus, in the community, or in a different part of the world.

Since its inaugural meeting in 2008, CGI U has brought together more than 6,500 students from over 850 schools and 150 countries to make over 4,800 Commitments to Action in CGI U's five focus areas:

  • Education
  • Environment and Climate Change
  • Peace and Human Rights
  • Poverty Alleviation
  • Public Health

Each year, students selected to participate in CGI U are invited to attend a national meeting, a three-day event where they meet with activists, celebrities, heads of leading NGOs, policy makers, topic experts, and fellow commitment-makers and attend plenary sessions, workshops, networking events and a day-long service project. After attending the CGI U Meeting, students return with the skills, insights and connections to turn their ideas into action.

The CGI U Meeting is usually held in early spring, and is hosted by a different U.S. university each year. CGI U 2016 will held in San Francisco, April 1-3, 2016.
