Meet Kayton Carter
My passion is to provide comprehensive support services to underrepresented college students who need them, and I am thrilled to be UC Davis’ director of Strategic African American Retention Initiatives.
The new Center for African Diaspora Student Success will bring students, faculty and staff together to engage in all aspects of campus life. We will inspire students to develop as leaders, succeed academically and become change agents in the world.
Prior to coming to UC Davis, I was the Oakland site director for the College Track college-prep program, and I’m looking forward to helping the high school and community college students that you serve find success at UC Davis.
Student Affairs has launched an African American Initiative that will enhance outreach, recruitment and retention efforts for African and African American students.
As we consider the most pressing challenges to increasing and enhancing the presence of African American undergraduate students at UC Davis, a three-fold approach is demanded:
- Grow and strengthen the pool of competitive applicants through strategic recruitment
- Increase the number of admitted students who choose to enroll at UC Davis through effective and impactful yield efforts
- Implement strategies that will support retention and persistence among enrolled African American students
As part of the initiative, a UC Davis Center for African Diaspora Student Success was opened in fall 2015. Kayton Carter, director of Strategic African American Retention Initiatives, will oversee the center.
