The Future Home of KDVS

In December 2018, after an in-depth seismic and facility assessment of Freeborn Hall, the difficult decision was made to move forward with demolition of the existing building and relocate all units and services housed in Lower Freeborn. This relocation effort has been ongoing with The Pantry moving to the Memorial Union in Spring 2019, The California Aggie moving to A Street in Winter 2020 and an upcoming move for Aggie Studios and Entertainment Council to the South Silo.

For KDVS, we are excited to share that a new home has been identified on the 1st Floor of the southeast corner of the Memorial Union. This prominent and visible location will operate as the dedicated KDVS headquarters and include designated areas for the broadcast studio, lounge/office space for staff and storage for most of “The Stacks,” the coveted record and CD library of the station. To preserve the entire collection, additional off-site storage for the remainder of “The Stacks” collection will also be temporarily provided until a more permanent location is identified.

KDVS began its broadcasting journey in a UC Davis residence hall room in 1963 before moving to Lower Freeborn where it has been operating for over 50 years. This relocation is a key component in the future vision for KDVS and its strategic direction. Historically, KDVS has strived to entertain, educate and unify its diverse community by providing multimedia avenues for creative expression. As a part of change management, KDVS will participate in a strategic planning process with Organizational Excellence to ensure a smooth transition into the new space. The new, more accessible location will ensure KDVS's continued viability as a leading student media outlet for years to come and augment the growth and development of its diverse community of supporters.

According to Noel Fernandez, KDVS General Manager, “Our new home in the Memorial Union will be the stomping ground for our current community to elevate their creative passions, as well as a supportive space for new KDVSers to cultivate their own.”

This will be a complex move with many considerations and planning efforts in partnership with KDVS, which are currently underway. KDVS will remain on air during the move. We hope to complete the relocation process during the 2021-22 academic year, and once we have a more precise timeline, we will provide updates to the community.
