The following FAQs are intended to serve as guidelines both when classes are canceled due to a change in campus operating status and after classes resume.

Academic senate leadership has posted Frequently Asked Questions for Instructors. We thought it might be helpful to rewrite them from the students’ perspective (see below).

In recent weeks and days, we have seen increased discussions and gatherings related to the protests in Hong Kong on our campus. As stated in our campus Principles of Community, “we affirm the right of freedom of expression within our community.” We fully support the open exchange of ideas and expression of perspectives.

Taking steps to stay secure in your online life. Boring? Sometimes... Important? Most definitely! Anyone can fall victim to breaches, cyber-attacks and scams in the Wild West that is the internet, and there’s no reason to feel bad if this has ever been you. Sixty percent of Americans say they or a close family member have been victims of a security scam or breach.

So, here are three easy, student-schedule-friendly things you can do right now—today—to help keep yourself protected.  

It’s a campus worst-case scenario—the sudden death of a student. The university is introducing new guidelines for how it will respond to this type of event. Whether from suicide, an accident or other cause, providing support and care after a campus death is a huge undertaking that calls for rapid and intensive coordination between many units and individuals. But beyond the requisite administrative arrangements, “a student is a part of the campus family,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for Health, Wellness and Divisional Resources Cory Vu.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation this year designated Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) an “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” for the first time. Earning a score of 100 on the foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), SHCS are one of only three student health centers in the country so recognized, and the only one in the UC system.

In response to rising rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns on college campuses nationwide, Chancellor May last year created a task force dedicated to mental health, with an emphasis on augmenting students' access to care. Here are a few of the new and enhanced services that are worth knowing about as we head into the new academic year.

Since the reinstatement on September 3, Campus Recreation and the Student Leadership Team have been utilizing the Action Plan for Reinstatement of the Marching Band to begin to implement the necessary changes to reconstruct the program. Some of this critical work has included writing the new mission, vision and values statement, developing procedures to fulfill the new bylaws and designing new uniforms.
